History of Technology Heroes and Villains – A little light reading Here you will find a brief history of technology. Initially inspired by the development of batteries, it covers technology in general and includes some interesting little known, or long forgotten, facts as well as a few myths about the development of technology, the science behind it, the context in which it occurred and the deeds of the many personalities, eccentrics and charlatans involved. You may find the Search Engine , the Technology Timeline or the Hall of Fame quicker if you are looking for something or somebody in particular. Scroll down and see what treasures you can discover. Background We think of a battery today as a source of portable power, but it is no exaggeration to say that the battery is one of the most important inventions in the history of mankind. Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery. Pioneers It is often overlooked that throughout the nineteenth century, most of the electrical experimenters, inventors and engineers who made these advances possible had to make their own batteries before they could start their investigations.

The scene and the ship, more likely based on the above shown pottery fragment from Kynos, is related to the mithical first Achaean attach to Troy lead by Herakles and his followers. Philistine wares are prevalent at Beit Shemesh. Therefore, it seems probable that the prototype of the ship engraved on the seal was Philistine TYPE VI “Tragana Cluster” With the continuation of the keel into a spur projecting beyound the straight sterpost, the Achaeans created a new hull-form, best represented by the vessels on the pyxis from Tragana and the larnax from Gazi.
The keel is flat, the sterpost generally straight with a slight curvature at the junction; essentially, then, the shape established by Skyros craft- both types share the loose-footed sail common at the end of the Late Bronze Age and not attested for Minoan ship- with the addition of the spur. This must have amounted to a complete redessigning of the bow, a task which, taking into account the conservatism prevalent among shipbuilders, surely was undertaken with a definite purpose in mind, in view of a net gain in performance.
He carefully scratched away some of the paint and discovered a crimped and soldered joint where the sides met, but no other revealing marks.
ContactGet in touch Time Charters. Types Gross and net charters The respective rights and obligations of the two parties to this time charterparty must depend upon its written terms, for there is no special law applicable to the particular form of contract known as a time charterparty. Basically, a time charter is a contract of lease of the vessel when the owners are paid irrespective whether their vessel employed during the time of lease or not, therefore apart from trip charter neither departure port nor the port of destination is of any importance for the owners.
There are two types of time charter, sometimes called “net” time charter and “gross” time charter. Net or demise time charter Net charter or charter by demise operates as a lease of the ship itself, usually without master and crew, therefore often also called bareboat charter. The charterer becomes for the time the owner of the vessel, employs the master and crew and through them the possession of the ship is in him.
Net time charter unlike Gross time charter has no off-hire clause, i. A bareboat demise charter differs from the common kinds of charterparty, such as time charters and voyage charters. Gross or ordinary time charter A gross time charter, unlike that one by demise, gives the charterer no right of property in or to possession of the vessel. For information about demise or bareboat charter click here. Fuel consumed during the charter period will be paid for separately by the charterers.
Hire, unlike freight, is subject to the usual rules of common law and equitable set off. Delay is also treated differently under a time charter.

Designed by Bill Crealock as a heavy displacement double ender for long distance cruising, this boat is the epitome of seaworthiness; built strong and heavy with huge interior volume. The trade off is in nimbleness; she is slow through the tacks and slow to accelerate. When sailed well the Westsail 32 can surprise.

However, overall, these depth charges were not very effective unless exploding quite close to the U-boat; say, about the length of your living room. The main benefit was psychological. However, the German Navy had to wrestle with a serious ethical and legal dilemma. Under international law, a warship could stop and search a merchantman; if found to be carrying contraband cargo for an enemy, the ship could be captured and a “prize crew” set aboard to sail her to an appropriate harbor.
Under some circumstances, the ship could be sunk, provided that the crew had been allowed to take to the lifeboats first. A submarine did not carry enough sailors to make up prize crews, so the only option was to sink the merchant ship. For this purpose, submarines were equipped with deck guns. However, if the submarine came to the surface to give fair warning, she herself became vulnerable to attack by ramming, by concealed guns, by warships rushing to the rescue.
German policy went through several cycles: With only 35 active U-boats, Germany began sinking British merchant ships faster than they could be built, and got very serious about submarines.

It is science, though many times confused as being the same thing. I’ll prove my point. You know that I could never have been inside of your mysterious building out there, and I imagine you can be sure no one has told me its secrets. Yet I’ll bet that I can describe fairly accurately what is in there—not from seeing the machinery, but from knowing what must be done to oil in order to get the products you need. You want to hear? Your crude oil runs into a tank of some kind, and you pipe it from there to a retort , some big vessel that you can seal airtight.
Once it is closed, you light a fire under the thing and try to get all the oil to an even temperature.

My cat used to drink from the garden pond and never seemed to suffer any ill effects, and you often see dogs drinking from muddy puddles. So why do humans have to be so careful and only drink clean water? Will it form sediment that gets buried beneath the seabed and eventually turns into plastic “oil” or “coal”? I had previously suspected that some tadpoles are late undergoing metamorphosis, but this one really missed the boat. Is this a recognised phenomenon, and what is the explanation?
Is there an accepted ratio or does it vary, and if so by how much? Does this mean there would have been three sets of chicken twins? But are plants included in this universal common ancestor? If so, are we linked to plants in very early stages of evolution? What is it made of and what is the typical wall thickness of this amazing auger?

Tonnage tons Hulk Originally a large ship used either as a transport or for carrying merchandise, particularly in the Mediterranean where hulks ranged up to about tons. It was contemporary with the carrack and occasionally described as such. In general, any large and unwieldy ship of simple construction with a rounded bow and stern was described as a hulk.
The sails were almost a relic of the Middle ages, while the hull was double ended, flat floored rather boxy type of affair, very good for carrying the maximum amount of cargo on the Yorkshire rivers and canals. A small cabin was located in the extreme stern. Lee boards were fitted and the mast could be lowered so that bridges could be negotiated.
In his book “City of God” he uses the example of magnetic phenomena to defend the idea of miracles.
Haley Marie Craig Aug 5, comments It’s an ancient tradition – words of wisdom passed down in short phrases from one generation to the next. The problem with this is that sometimes, things get switched around and the original meaning is lost. We often misquote famous phrases without even knowing it. In fact, do you know that the most famous misquote is from “Apollo 13”?
Thankfully, we have the internet; where there is always someone there to fact check you. These phrases look a little different when you get to see the whole picture. Blood is thicker than water. Curiosity killed the cat. I often heard the first half when I was little and asking too many questions, but the full phrase suggest that there is no such thing as too many questions. A jack of all trades is a master of none.
